Iluel and Meb
Iluel and Meb
The story of this artwork is drawn from my Athe's (grandfather's) home of Erub, otherwise known as Darnley Island and his tribe, Saisarem. It is a story that is still being told today through visual storytelling such as dance (girls only) and song, known as Iluel Keb.
Iluel (evening star) is a beautiful girl from the Saisarem tribe on the north-west side of Erub. Her boyfriend Meb (moon) is a Meuram man from the eastern side of the island. Their relationship is troubled as Meb is jealous of Iluel and Lum (sun). As they try to repair their relationship and Meb endeavours to take Iluel back to his homeland his jealously overcomes him and he is unsuccessful.
Once a month Iluel and Meb can be seen together in the north-western (Saisarem tribal area) night sky, however each night they drift further and further apart until Meb is back to his tribal land on the eastern side of Erub where he appears in the sky as a full moon.
